Traditional Advisor Marketing — A Resource-Intensive Model

The traditional model for executing a modern advisor marketing strategy is a resource-intensive endeavor that puts effective, scalable growth out of reach for most small to medium sized RIAs.

For many firms, the immediate answer to a modern advisor marketing strategy is doing it yourself, hiring marketing professionals or outsourcing to an agency. However, this path is often far more complex and costly than it appears. The traditional model for executing a modern advisor marketing strategy is a resource-intensive endeavor that puts effective, scalable growth out of reach for most small to medium sized RIAs.

Industry data suggests that small advisory firms typically allocate between 1-3% of their annual revenue to marketing. While this figure may seem reasonable, it often falls drastically short of the resources required to compete in today's digital landscape. As firms quickly discover, the time commitment and keeping up with changes is untenable. The cost to hire talent internally or outsource can easily approach or exceed $60,000 to $500,000 per year. This disconnect between typical budgets and the resources required forces firms into a series of compromises that ultimately undermine their growth objectives.

The Iron Triangle

In project management, there is a concept known as the "iron triangle," where you have to choose two: faster, better, or cheaper. When forced to choose, many firms opt for cheap solutions like templated websites, generic videos and blogs, or scattershot social media feeds.

While these tactics check a box, they fail to differentiate the firm or capture the attention of sophisticated clients. This "cookie-cutter" approach is not memorable, delivering a poor return on investment and doing little to build a sustainable pipeline of new business.

The result is marketing that consumes resources without generating meaningful growth, reinforcing the idea that marketing is a cost center rather than a driver of revenue. A higher quality solution typically requires a team of specialists, as a single hire rarely possesses the wide range of skills required. A higher quality solution may also resemble multiple small, specialized agencies, with distinct roles that must work together. Again, these traditional solutions often invite unforeseen complexities and are more costly than anticipated.

The Alternative: Targeting a Niche with Team of AI Agents and a Human-in-the-Loop (HITL)

The inherent flaws in the traditional model—high cost, inefficiency, and slow execution—reveal the need for a new approach. Rather than attempting to do it yourself or build a large, multi-disciplinary team, leading firms are embracing a leaner, more powerful alternative: a marketing technologist who orchestrates a team of specialized AI agents.

What is an AI agent?

An AI agent autonomously executes actions to achieve a goal. It has a brain, hands and an orchestration layer that pulls it all together. It decides what matters based on the data it's given and what tools are needed to gain additional context for its next cycle of thought.

Instead of relying on the firm founder, lead advisor or human for every task, the marketing technologist leverages AI to handle the heavy lifting across a comprehensive strategy. This approach augments human expertise, allowing one to two people to achieve the output of a much larger team.

This shift transforms firm growth. By embracing a multi-agent ensemble, firms can finally achieve both the speed and quality required to win in the modern market without the prohibitive cost and complexity of multiple team members or agencies.
